Description
The 2nd in the series of Canadian Heritage Rivers stamps was issued on April 22, 1992, illustrating 5 of this country's famous waterways of industry and commerce. Similar to format used in 1991,, the stamps were issued in a Stamp Pack of 10. Canada is famous worldwide for its natural resource industries, fisheries, logging, agriculture, hydro-electric power, recreation and tourism.
As the link between Montreal and the interior for early fur-trading voyageurs, the Ottawa River has been a highway for Canadian commerce for over 300 years. It was also famous for its log-driving runs, supplying timber for colonists to build the new nation. Its strategic location, joining Ontario and Quebec, led to the decision to designate a town on its bank as the capital of the new Dominion. White-water rafting has replaced timber rafting on the river, and is an important contribution to Ottawa's status as a world-class tourism destination.
