Description
The third issue of Calgary Olympic Winter Games stamps features bobsleigh and speedskating. Both stamps reflect the speed which is so much a part of winter sports. Speedskaters will compete at the Olympic Oval, the world's first fully enclosed 400-meter speedskating oval. Championship skaters race in pairs, in separate lanes. In short sprint races they average more than 48 kilometers an hour, and over longer distances they can cover a mile in three minutes, about one minute faster than elite track and field athletes. Designer Pierre-Yves Pelletier of Montreal continues with his stylized, diagonal-screen interpretation of sports photographs as seen on previous stamps issued for the Calgary Olympic Winter Games. In this issue, one stamp is based on a two-man bobsleigh built to meet the specifications set for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, while the other shows a female speedskater.
