Description

Prominent Canadian gardens are the subject of five stamps issued on May, 1991. The final stamp in the set portrays the Montreal Botanical Gardens, concept of Brother Marie-Victorin, who also founded the "Institut botanique de l'Université de Montréal" in 1922. The idea was first presented on December 14, 1929 at a meeting of the "Société d'Histoire Naturelle" in Montreal. The concept was well received by the City and on March 4, 1932, a substantial sum was allocated to the project, with Maisonneuve Park being selected as the primary site. Hard economic times during the 1930s nearly jeopardized the gardens, but Marie-Victorin's persistence paid off and in 1942 the city of Montreal became totally responsible for the Garden. Designer David Wyman and illustrator Gerard Gauci combined their talents to produce the designs.
