Description

Since ancient times, people have associated plants with various festivals. The tradition persists today and these new stamps thus feature Christmas plants. Those who decorate their homes with wreaths of holly's shiny green leaves and red berries are enjoying a tradition dating back to the Druids. They brought sprays of the plant indoors to serve as winter homes for woodlands spirits. The Romans exchanged holly branches as tokens of friendship, while early Christians used them as Christmas decorations. Québec painter Claude A. Simard, who has a keen interest in horticulture, has chosen an original way to illustrate the annual Christmas stamp series. By deftly combining the warm reds, greens and golds of traditional Christmas plants and accessories, he has managed to infuse each stamp with the festive atmosphere of the holidays.
