Description

The noble walrus, the lordly musk-ox, and the herculean grizzly bear continue the series of large mammals appearing on the Canadian medium-value definitive stamps. Two of these stamps - the walrus and the grizzly bear - will ben available in five-stamp packs. The grizzly bear is awesome in size and titanic strength. Its name stems from the flecked (grizzled) appearance of its hair. The grizzly bear's teeth, as well as a hump on its shoulders distinguishes it from the smaller black bear and the larger polar bear. Until the advent of the rifle, few humans dared to contend with the huge bear, the lumbering master of all it surveyed. Pressed into living in remote parts of Canada, the ferocious grizzly now shuns man. Brian Tsang, a Toronto graphic artist, designed these three mammal stamps to suggest the animals' environment in the same graphic style used for previous stamps in the series featuring large Canadian mammals.
